The final weekend in April saw JO3, JO2 and Regional squad travel to Huddersfield for the Borough of Kirklees Spring Open Meet. Despite difficult deck conditions, Team Steel took home 17 golds, 16 silvers and 19 bronzes. It was a great experience for the JO3 swimmers to get some racing under their belts, and to learn from the older swimmers. JO2 raced really well and demonstrated the great skills they have been working on in training.

Medals came from all events and all squads, showing Team Steel's strength and depth. Holly Steade and Daisy Fowler had some great swims, and showed their experience on the 100 Backstroke both taking the gold in their age groups. This must have inspired some of our youngest swimmers to step up for the 50 backstroke, such as Isla Heathcote winning silver, Eden Joel-Drennan silver, Ava Cook Bronze and Alexandra Tartakovski Bronze.

Team Steel had some swimmers who backed up their great form from the Barnsley Minors a few weeks ago, such as Amber Finlay who took silver in the 100 Breaststroke, then managed one better over half the distance taking gold in the 50. Other great swims were Megan Helm sprinting to gold in the 50 Freestyle, Connor Shering powering to a silver over 100 backstroke and Ruben Anderson with a terrific 100 Fly took gold. The 200 Freestyle was the time for Team Steel to shine, with amazing performances coming from everywhere. Ella Starling, Molly Baker, George Tartakovski and Jacob Haslingdon all receiving the gold medal in their age group, Hamza Al-Mas and Vincent Navarro took silver and bronze respectively.

This was great meet for our younger swimmers to practice their race skills, and their hard work in the pool is paying off. It will be exciting to see our swimmers in the upcoming summer competitions.
